Resumo:

This talk will present the work done since 2007 in Ecuador for improving the determination of earthquake parameters for historical events, and for establishing probabilistic seismic hazard maps for the country (base of any seismic zoning). The study of historical earthquakes enables to extend the window covered by the instrumental catalog. New methods exist that enable to interpret intensity data in terms of magnitude and location of the event.Based on the earthquake catalog merging the historical and instrumental parts, and on the knowledge of the main tectonic features in the region, simple models for recurrence of earthquakes can be proposed.Probabilistic seismic hazard for Ecuador can then be determined, providing the probabilities of occurrence of acceleration levels over time windows (of interest for earthquake engineering, e.g. 30 or 50 yrs). According to our preliminary results, the hazard is high in the Sierra, and very high on most of the Ecuadorian coast.
