The CGE joined several networks with other national and international Research Units:

- AERONET network (AErosol RObotic NETwork) belonging to NASA (2003), which aggregates about 300 observation stations all over the world, two of which owned by CGE in Continental Portugal (Évora and Cabo da Roca), aims at providing data on  climate relevant optical and physical aerosol properties;

- The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) (2005). The EMSC is charged by the Council of Europe (CoE) to provide the latter with seismic warnings in the framework of the Open Partial Agreement (OPA) on the prevention of, protection against, and organisation of relief in major natural and technological disasters.

- National Geophysics Network (2006), which aggregates six National Research Units including CGE and one State Laboratory, aiming at sharing relevant data obtained by every partner in the fields of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences;

- Portuguese Coordinated Seismic Initiative on Broad Band Observation (2007), which joins the “Instituto de Meteorologia” (IM, Lisboa), the “Centro de Geofísica da Universidade de Lisboa” (CGUL/IDL, University of Lisbon), the “Instituto Geofísico do Infante D. Luiz” (IGIDL) and the “Centro de Geofísica de Évora” (CGE, Évora University)”. This network is devoted to coordinate their efforts for the deployment, operation and maintenance of a broadband seismic network, regarding the densification of the stations, as well as the collection, distribution and scientific exploitation of data.

- Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a Cooperation framework on Earthquake surveillance in the Western Mediterranean Region (Regional Seismic Network in the Western Mediterranean - RSN-WM) during 2007, which joins several European and Mediterranean countries and have the participation of the regional and international seismological organizations: EMSC (European-Mediterranean Seismological Center), ORFEUS (Observatories and Research Facilities for European Seismology), FDSN (Federation of Digital Seismic Networks), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) North-Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Tsunami Warning System’ (NEAMTWS). The MoU has entered in force on October 1, 2006.

- CGE officially joined in 2007 and is already having an effective scientific cooperation with the EMEPC (Estrutura de Missão para a extensão da Plataforma Continental) in order to prepare, to the light of the United Nations convention on the Law of the Sea (CNUDM, Convention des Nations Unies sur le Droit de la Mer), a proposal of extension of the Continental Platform of Portugal, beyond the 200 nautical miles, to be presented to the Commission of Limits of the Continental Platform of Portugal (CLPC), agency constituted in the scope of the CNUDM. These studies will improve the knowledge on the continent-ocean transition, as well on oceanic lithosphere.

- Project of Observatory/Laboratory in Earth, Atmospheric and Climate Sciences of the National Re-equipment Programme for University of Évora-National Geophysics Network (2007), which joins three Research Units (FCUL- Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa,CEG- Centro de Estudos Geográficos da Universidade de Lisboa and CGE) and one State Laboratory (IM), aiming at sharing a multi-channel LIDAR-RAMAN system, in the process of acquisition by CGE under the framework of National Re-Equipment Programme;

- In 2008 CGE will join RIMA (Rede Ibérica de Medidas de Aerossóis) Network, coordinated by University of Valladolid in Spain, associated with AERONET network in which CGE is already participating since 2003, aiming at improving the network for Iberian Peninsula;

- In 2010 COPAL research infrastructure (Community heavy-Payload Long endurance Instrumented Aircraft for Tropospheric Research in Environmental and Geo-Sciences) is expected to be available for CGE research in cooperation with other national and European research units, once the proposal INFRA-2007-2.2.1.9 of this research infrastructure, recently submitted to FP7 Programme is successfully approved. This airborne research infrastructure, aggregating different European partners, including FCT with the scientific support of CGE, will provide the Portuguese scientific community with new research opportunities in terms of research in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.


There are also the following official collaboration protocols recently established (2007) between the Unit and the following Institutions:

- IM and Meteo France, for the access and operation of the AROME and MesoNH models, both French mesoscale meteorological models;

- CERENA (IST), CICEGE (UNL) and GeoBioTec (Univ. Aveiro), for multidisciplinary sharing of equipment, mobility of research staff and students and submission of International /European Projects.
