PRESENTATION

CAPEX

CAPEX is a European project to investigate aerosol particles, radiation, cloud properties, precipitation and radioactivity over Portugal using the capabilities of the aircraft BAe-146 provided and operated by the British Metoffice and the capabilities of the ground based remote sensing at the Atmospheric Physics Observatory of Évora Geophysics Centre, at Évora and Cabo da Roca sites. It will take place in May/June 2006 over central and south Portugal and consists of three individual projects:

AEROPOR
AERosols Over Portugal
Leading scientist: Profª Ana Maria Silva, University of Évora, Centro de Geofísica

CLAPREC
Clouds, Aerosols, Precipitation
Leading scientist: Prof. João Corte-Real, University of Évora, Centro de Geofísica

VPRACOP
Vertical Profiles of Radioactive Aerosol Constituents Over Portugal
Leading Scientist: Doutor. Fernando da Piedade Carvalho

DARPO

DARPO (Desert Dust and Biomass Burning Aerosols over Portugal) is a European project for the investigation of desert aerosol particles transported from the African Sahara to Portugal and for the investigation of forest fire aerosols created inside Portugal. The aircraft (FA 20) - provided and operated by the Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) - will fly over Morocco and central Portugal up to 10 flight hours between 18 May and 7 June 2006.

The experiment is closely connected to the German SAMUM experiment (http://www.tropos.de/samum) which will take place in May/June in Morocco.
Leading Scientists: Doutor Daniele Bortoli and Doutor Frank Wagner
