Preface

This book includes the 112 papers accepted to be presented at the Global Conference on Global Warming (GCGW – 2011), which was held from 11-14 July 2011, in Lisbon, Portugal. GCGW – 2011 attracted the attention of scientists from all over the world working in the areas of climate, environment, energy and the economy.

Many papers update the views about the Earth system, present evidences that global Earth temperature is rising and that the Earth system goes through significant forcing. Besides, many other papers show new views to old problems, new ideas and solutions, challenge current paradigms of energy use, and of resources exploitation.

GCGW - 2011 also had the collaboration of seven distinguished keynote speakers who presented comprehensive perspectives of the themes of the conference: Ibrahim Dincer, "Renewables and hydrogen energy options to combat global warming", Jost Heintzenberg; "The aerosol – cloud – climate conundrum"; John Gale, "Carbon capture and storage; global potential and status"; João Teixeira, "Turbulence, clouds and climate models: tackling the largest uncertainty in climate change projections"; Chris Thomas, "Impacts of climate change on biodiversity, and the implications for conservation"; Robert Ayres, "Exergy, work and economic growth – past and future"; Kjell Aleklett "Future energy scenarios - peak oil, peak gas and peak coal.
GCGW had the collaboration of the Advisory Committee, a distinguished panel of scientists who helped the Organization Committee with useful recommendations, on reviewing the papers submitted to the conference. GCGW - 2011 had also the organizational support of the Geophysics Centre of Évora (CGE), a research unit of the University of Évora, and the collaboration of the staff of that research centre.
Special thanks are due to Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation for the facilities provided to GCGW- 2011.

Finally, we thank all the participants and, in particular, those who contributed to this book by submitting their papers to GCGW – 2011.
